Slinging An AR-15

After a period of rapid design as an aid to shooting, rifle slings were relegated to carrying the weapon and simpler designs prevailed. In world war two there was one sling per weapon and essentially only one way to mount it. With the M16 and XM-177 things opened up a bit with the option of putting the sling through the front sight post on the M16 and several different optional placements on the XM-177's collapsible buttstock. The increase in importance of the rifle in the conflicts that followed the fall of the Soviet Union drove the development of the sling and its attachment, and the options available now would amaze a soldier of Word War 2.

For example the Magpul CTR stock has two slots in the cheekpiece, one in the buttplate and one in its diagonal supporting arm, plus a hole in the toe of the butt for a paracord sling and a fitting for a push button sling swivel under the rear of the cheekpiece. With that, or any other retractable stock fitted, you can add to the options still further by fitting a  Magpul ASAP Ambidextrous Sling Attachment Point which enables rapid switching of the sling from side to side, enabling ambidextrous operation of the weapon. This is terrific for firing over and around cover for example. In the event of injury the firer can switch arms. A full 180 degrees of sling movement is possible with the 1/8" steel loop of the cast steel ASAP. It is protected by a very durable black parkerized finish which resists wear and corrosion. The ASAP is a straight swap for the factory end plate of either milspec or commercial receivers and requires no other modifications to the weapon. Any single point sling with a snap-hook attachment can be attached to the ASAP.

Front attachment points are required for two-point slings. The Magpul RSA Rail Sling attachment attaches to any MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny or STANAG 4694 handguard rail in any of a number of configurations to provide for left or right and top or bottom sling mounting. The RSA is very low profile and will not obstruct sights. Steel is used for its construction, tested to 300 pounds of stress. To avoid snagging a rounded profile is used. Any two-piece sling with snap fittings will fit the RSA. Again a parkerized finish is used to protect the steel from corrosion.

The instructors at Magpul Dynamics put a lot of time and effort into designing the Magpul MS2 sling. This tactical sling is equally at home in single and two-point operation. Two-point sling enables carry over long distances when the rifle is not required for immediate use and the use of the sling to stabilize the weapon when shooting. Single-point slinging allows much higher levels of readiness to be maintained. This sling used with the ASAP enables truly ambidextrous operation. The MS2 is made of thin, strong nylon and is available in black or dark earth. High stress areas are reinforced with double stitching. Rust-proof, heavy-duty bronze and polymer friction locks are used and the bronze snap hooks are equipped with spring loaded safety locks to ensure they only release when required. The length can be varied with one hand using the thumb loop provided. A "Lock jaw" snap-hook is used which rotates freely to prevent binding and twisting. This is the QR connector in single-point mode and the front attachment when used as a two-point sling. Should it be necessary to jettison the weapon in a hurry, for example when exiting a burning vehicle, the rear "snap shackle" has a paracord pigtail on its pull safety to enable easy one handed release.
